Storms hit Central America
Tropical Storm Matthew weakened to a tropical depression over the weekend along the coast of Belize, dousing the southern part of the Central American nation and neighbouring Guatemala with rain that caused flooding in coastal areas.
Guatemalan people were urged to stay off the roads as floods hit several towns in eastern and northern Guatemala.
Civil Defence operations commander Sergio Cabanas said flooding was reported in Izabal and Peten provinces, and there were concerns about people staying in their homes.
In neighbouring Belize, people were being evacuated from three towns near the border with Guatemala after flood waters rose, said Peter Eden Martinez, the Cabinet representative in charge of emergency precautions for the flood-prone southern region.
