The United Nations Security Council tonight condemned the terrorist bombings at the Egyptian resort of Dahab “in the strongest terms” and urged all countries to cooperate in bringing the perpetrators, organisers and financiers to justice.

A presidential statement, approved by consensus of all 15 council members, reaffirmed that terrorism constituted ”one of the most serious threats to international peace and security” and could never be justified.

The council reiterated its determination to combat all forms of terrorism “by all means”.

“The Security Council condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist bombings that took place in Dahab, Egypt, on April 24, 2006,” said the statement, read at a formal council meeting by the current president, China’s UN Ambassador Wang Guangya.

“The Security Council expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims of these attacks and their families, and to the people and the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt as well as to all other countries whose citizens have been killed or injured in these bombings,” the statement said.

The council urged all countries to fulfill their obligations under previous council resolutions and “cooperate with and provide support and assistance” to Egypt to ensure that those responsible for the bombings were brought to justice.
