Kate Winslet is still bitter about being branded a "b*tch" by the press for leaving her first husband.
The Titanic actress, 28, "cried a lot" at the implications she had cheated on Jim Threapleton with her present spouse Sam Mendes and that she was too busy to raise her daughter Mia.
Winslet explains: "The press in this country (Britain) for a long time were like, 'Our Kate, our wonderful English rose.'
"Then, suddenly, it was like I was a b*tch from hell, and that's a hard pill to swallow because we all want people to like us. It was so outrageously cruel. You feel like you're being bullied on the playground and you can't fight back.
"The press claimed Sam and I had an affair and all this kind of stuff, that I was spending my time going to premieres and theatre openings and that I didn't actually raise my child and that she lived with her father.
"I was so upset, I cried. I cried a lot. I really resented it."
Winslet is adamant her marriage breakdown had nothing to do with Mendes. She adds: "It was incredibly hard, especially with a very small child."
