The widely-anticipated sale of a rare copy of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was not to be today, when it failed to reach the asking price at auction.

The copy, printed in 1611, was predicted to fetch more than €1.5m at Christie’s in New York.

But the auction house said tonight that it failed to sell.

The manuscript is the earliest available version of the play held by a private collector.

It was on sale as part of a wider collection from the Estate of Mary, Viscountess Eccles.
