Mohamed Al Fayed, the owner of Harrods, is said to be planning to join the fight for control of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph newspapers.
Hollinger has been rocked by a financial scandal involving unauthorised payments to executives which two weeks ago resulted in the departure of chief executive Lord Conrad Black.
The financial review facing Hollinger is widely expected to result in the sale of the group's newspaper assets, which include the Jerusalem Post and the Chicago Times as well as the Telegraph newspapers.
If he decides to go ahead Mr Fayed would join a list of potential high-profile buyers for the Telegraph titles.
