Leading French actor Boon, a modern-day answer to Chaplin and Keaton, is at his best in this quirky and utterly mad, tumbling film, one that races from one outstanding cinematic delight – and surprise – to another.
Jeunet – who brought us Amelie – gives Boon a wonderful role as a man to whom almost too much misfortune happens … his father dies in a landmine tragedy, he sees a shooting outside the shop where he works and gets shot in the head himself, he subsequently loses his home, belongings and job and takes to the streets where he is befriended by a group of decidedly off-centre characters who live underground.
Revenge is uppermost on his mind sso he and his freakish misfits set out to gain it against the big corporations who made the mine and the bullet.
It makes for a rollercoaster of a film that’s great fun.
