Benfica v Man Utd

Benfica v Man Utd

Anders Lindegaard was handed his Champions League debut but there was still no place for Dimitar Berbatov in Alex Ferguson’s starting line-up for the Champions League opener against Benfica.

Lindegaard has been acting as deputy to new goalkeeper David de Gea but got his chance to impress in the Stadium of Light as Ferguson made eight changes to his starting line-up from Saturday’s win at Bolton.

In addition to Lindegaard, Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia were amongst those to make their first starts of the season, with Berbatov joined by Michael Owen on the bench.

Benfica: Artur Moraes, Maxi Pereira, Luisao, Garay, Emerson, Amorim, Javi Garcia, Witsel, Aimar, Cardozo, Gaitan.

Subs: Eduardo, Bruno Cesar, Nolito, Machado, Matic, Saviola, Jardel.

Man Utd: Lindegaard, Fabio Da Silva, Evans, Smalling, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Giggs, Valencia, Rooney, Park.

Subs: De Gea, Jones, Owen, Anderson, Berbatov, Hernandez, Nani.

Referee: Damir Skomina (Slovenia)
