Michael Schumacher has dismissed concerns new Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa is not up to Formula One standard.

The Brazilian will be promoted to number two behind the Schumacher following Rubens Barrichello’s decision to leave the Italian outfit at the end of the season.

Questions have been raised over the suitability of Massa, who has often struggled in his three seasons at Sauber.

However, Schumacher said: “I am happy for Felipe. In my view he deserves this chance as he has been doing a good job for quite a while now.

“We have seen his talent lately in F1 but also when he was a test driver for us.”

The German added: “We have not been the only ones who were interested in him.”
