A group of New York firefighters was today due to attend a fundraising event for the families of colleagues lost or injured in the terror attacks of September 11.

Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen was due to accept an award at London’s Claridges recognising the bravery and dedication of the Fire Department of New York in their efforts to rescue the victims at the World Trade Centre, at a terrible loss of more than 300 firefighters.

The Walpole Humanitarian Award was being presented by Walpole, a group of 80 British brands.

Mr Von Essen said: ‘‘The New York City Fire Department is proud to accept this award in recognition of the bravery exhibited by firefighters and other rescue workers whose efforts saved nearly 25,000 lives on September 11.’’

There are 10 firefighters in the group, plus wives and some children.

There will also be representatives of London Fire Brigade at the event, to meet their New York counterparts.

American ambassador William Farish said: ‘‘Americans have been deeply touched by the enormous outpouring of support from across the United Kingdom since the attacks of September 11.

‘‘And people everywhere have been inspired by the heroism of New York’s emergency workers. We are grateful and honoured to join with Walpole in saluting the Fire Department of New York.’’

Walpole chairman Rupert Hambro said: ‘‘Walpole has always had close links with New York and member companies have a considerable commercial presence in the city.

‘‘It is fitting that leading British brands should take positive action to provide help, recognition and support at this difficult time.’’

Walpole has set up a fund for the families affected. Anyone wishing to make a donation, either in kind or money (cheques made payable to ‘The Walpole Committee Ltd - FDNY Account’), should send them to Walpole at 54 Jermyn Street, London SW1Y 6LX, 020 7292 3788.
