McCarthy cools interest in Newcastle striker

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has decided against making a fresh move for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll during next month's transfer window.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has decided against making a fresh move for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll during next month's transfer window.

McCarthy revealed he was interested in signing the England U-21 international in the summer, but will not be stepping up his interest in Carroll.

The former Republic of Ireland manager said: "We were interested in Andy Carroll in the last window but Newcastle didn't want to sell then and I haven't enquired since.

"In any case, I would imagine with them being top of the Championship, they don't want to sell now either."

Wolves' record signing Kevin Doyle netted his fifth goal of the season during Sunday's 2-0 win over Burnley at Molineux and has impressed constantly since his £6.5m move from Reading.

McCarthy is also delighted to see Sylvan Ebanks-Blake starting to show the form which brought him more than 20 goals last season.

He said: "I think Sylvan's last three games have been different class. He has just had a child and probably sleepless nights and lifestyles change because of it.

"In the last three games Sylvan and Doyle have been brilliant together and a good partnership is blossoming."

McCarthy is also not set to pursue any interest in Birmingham's veteran midfielder Lee Carsley after reports he was poised to bid £1million for the 35-year-old.

Carsley has lost his place at St Andrew's because of the form of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson.

Blues boss Alex McLeish confirmed: "I've not heard anything about Lee and Wolves. No-one has been in touch with me."
