British rapper The Streets has joined Floetry, Cody Chestnutt and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to vie for this year’s Shortlist Music Prize, which honours the best non-mainstream artists in the music world.

Other finalists include Icelandic band Sigur Ros, Bright Eyes, Black Keys, Interpol, Damien Rice and Cat Power.

Winners will be selected by a committee that includes Dave Matthews, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Tori Amos, Perry Farrell, the Neptunes and director Spike Jonze.

Music industry veterans Greg Spotts and Tom Sarig created the prize in 2001 to honour the year’s most creative and adventurous albums that have sold fewer than 500,000 copies.

Previous winners are N.E.R.D., the band created by The Neptunes, and Sigur Ros.

The winner is selected after a Shortlist concert. This year’s concert, to be held on October 5 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, will be aired as part of an hour-long special on MTV2 later that month. Performers include Bright Eyes and Damien Rice.
