A 16-year-old boy has died after the car he was travelling in plunged into a lagoon, British police said today.

The teenager was in a Skoda car with two other males when it crashed down an embankment into the icy water, known locally as the Blue Lagoon, at Horbury, near Wakefield.

West Yorkshire Police said the driver and another passenger managed to scramble from the submerged car to safety.

Emergency services were called to the lagoon shortly after 8.30pm yesterday and conducted a search of the area.

A police helicopter was deployed and officers used a thermal imaging camera in a bid to locate the missing youth.

A police spokesman said a body was later discovered by an underwater search unit.

The two people who escaped were taken to hospital for treatment.
