Fresh from helping Ballgalget to the Down and Ulster hurling titles, Down sharp-shooter Johnny McGrattan has won the Tennents/Ulster GAA Writers' Merit award for October.
The 28-year-old McGrattan, who made his senior debut as a teenager, struck seven points in the county final against Ballycran. He also bagged 1-8 to see off Ulster championship favourites Cushendall a fortnight ago.
“I’m just speechless at getting this honour,” said McGrattan. “There are not many individual honours like it around and for a hurler to get this award is really special.”
McGrattan, an NHL Division Two winner with Down last year, is the first hurler to win the Ulster gong since January 2004.
