Andrei Shevchenko delivered the final blow as AC Milan emerged victorious in a penalty shoot-out to win the European Cup for the sixth time tonight after a tension-filled penalty shoot-out win at Old Trafford.

After a scoreless 120 minutes, in which Antonio Conte saw a header come crashing off the bar for Juventus and Andriy Shevchenko had an early strike disallowed for offside, the European Cup was decided by spot-kicks for the seventh time.

And it was Milan who emerged victorious from the all-Italian showdown as Shevchenko kept his cool to rifle home the vital spot-kick after Dida had brilliantly kept out three Juventus efforts.

In the shoot-out, Milan got the upper hand virtually straight away when Dida saved David Trezeguet’s opening kick, only for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Gigi Buffon to level it up by keeping out Clarence Seedorf’s effort three shots later.

Dida, though, pulled off another flying stop to deny Marcelo Zalayeta, only for Buffon to save Kakha Kaladze’s effort.

Dida though was not to be denied and when he prevented Paolo Montero’s shot entering the net, Alessandro Nesta kept his nerve to put AC Milan in the driving seat.

Del Piero had to score for Juve and he didn't disappoint, sending goalkeeper Dida the wrong way.

It was left to Andriy Shevchenko to keep his nerve and he did, to give Milan victory they just about deserved.
