Malaysia: Tests on water in 'miracle' well

Hundreds of people are flocking to a well in a Malaysian town after residents claimed its murky water turned clear and has healing powers following a miracle, it was reported today.

Residents claimed the 26-year-old well, dug by the local council near the wet market in Pasir Putih in northeast Kelantan state, once contained foul water strewn with rubbish, the New Straits Times said.

But on Thursday, a “white light” shone from the well and the water turned clear and emitted a sweet fragrance, residents told the paper.

“In the past, water from the well was reddish in colour and had a foul smell. Many would not even go near the well. Now, you can even drink it straight from the well without boiling the water first,” fishmonger Baharum Mamat was quoted as saying.

Trader Basri Hashim, 50, told the newspaper he was performing prayers at a mosque near the well on Thursday when the congregation caught a whiff of the fragrance.

“After completing the prayers, many heard the sound of water gushing in the well. We went and saw that the water was clean and clear,” he said.

District health officers have taken samples of the water for tests, it added.

Pasir Putih health officials could not be reached today for comments.
