The Kursk has passed the half-way point on its way to the surface of the Barents Sea.

Salvagers expect the entire operation to last around 12 hours.

Engineers have removed the submarine's damaged nose and are lifting the remainder using steel ropes.

The Kursk, one of Russia's most modern submarines, exploded and sank on August 12 last year, killing its entire 118-man crew.

The lifting operation is being covered on the salvage team's website - www.kurksalvage.com
