Rising Bolger star shines at Leopardstown

Jim Bolger looks to have another smart juvenile on his hands in the shape of Leopardstown scorer New Approach.

The County Carlow-based trainer handled last year’s champion two-year-old Teofilo with aplomb in 2006 and is treading a familiar path with this son of Galileo, who took his record to two from two in the feature Tyros Stakes.

A fortnight ago, New Approach won the same maiden that went the way of last year’s Dewhurst hero and he repeated the trick by lifting this seven-furlong Group Three contest.

Kevin Manning soon kicked the evens favourite into an early lead and dictated matters at the head of affairs.

While the pair briefly looked in trouble as runner-up Brazilian Star loomed large on turning for home, New Approach soon kicked again and scored by a ready two lengths.

Ladbrokes were among those most impressed and gave Bolger’s two-year-old a quote of 16-1 for next season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Cashmans are slightly bigger at 20-1 from 25s, but also introduced New Approach at 20-1 in their ante-post market for the Derby.

Bolger said: “We’ll go for the Futurity Stakes and then we’ll see where we go after that with him.

“We’ll look at the National Stakes and the Goffs Million too. He is a real proper horse.”

The victory provided Manning and Bolger with a 9-1 double after Linsalata had earlier got off the mark at the third attempt in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden.

Sent off at 4-1, the daughter of Soviet Star proved a length and a quarter too good for Wrong Number.

Fracas later gained a hard-fought victory over Aidan O’Brien’s Red Rock Canyon in an exciting renewal of the Meld Stakes.

David Wachman’s charge was sent off the well-backed 4-5 favourite for this 10-furlong Group Three prize and took up a prominent position as stablemate You’re Beautiful cut out the early running.

Fracas moved into a challenging position soon after the field swung for home, but with two furlongs to run he was under pressure along with three others vying for the lead.

And while 14-1 shot Red Rock Canyon emerged as a major player at the distance, Fracas stuck his neck out and kept moving forward to grab the initiative and score by half a length.

Wachman felt he won with a touch in hand and said: “He’s getting cleverer by the minute and only did the bare minimum there.

“We’ll keep plugging away at these sorts of races with him now.”

The victory provided Wayne Lordan with a near 9-1 double, after Essential Fear had landed the Coyle Hamilton Willis Fillies Handicap for Edward Lynam earlier on the card.

Evening Time regained the winning thread in very easy fashion when triumphing in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Sweet Mimosa Stakes.

Kevin Prendergast’s grey had finished third on her belated reappearance at the Curragh, but came with a devastating run under Declan McDonogh to take this Listed event with any amount in hand.

Having shot to the front at the two-furlong point, the 5-2 favourite only had to be pushed out to put a long-looking five lengths between herself and 10-1 chance Lidanski.

Tracey Collins sent out fellow 10-1 shot and recent Fairyhouse maiden winner Cuilaphuca to take third.

Prendergast said of the winner: “She has a great change of gear and she just has a different gear to the others in this soft ground.

“We’ve not tried her on dry ground as she hasn’t the action for that, but the problem is where to go with her as she’s not a great traveller.”
