Barclaycard is to offer customers in Britain loans to replace the balance on their credit card.

The loans are being piloted by the UK's largest credit card provider.

Barclaycard, which has 9 million customers, is now offering pre-approved loans to customers with large balances on their credit card in an attempt to demonstrate a more responsible approach to lending.

This move comes after comments made by CEO Matt Barrett last October to British MPs on the Treasury Select Committee that he does not use credit cards to amass debt "because it's too expensive".

The comments angered customers and shareholders.
