Rock trio the Police are secretly lining up a string of reunion dates in Britain and America, according to US music industry reports.

If true, the shows will be the first the group has played together since splitting in 1986 - and they'll mark the 30th anniversary of their hit Roxanne, which turned Sting Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers into an international force.

In a statement issued last month, bosses at the group's record label revealed it was their intention "to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalogue of songs," but they stopped short at suggesting a reunion.

The members of the Police have only come together twice since breaking up - for Sting's 1992 wedding to Trudy Styler and for the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Sting has always been reluctant to stage a reunion but last summer Summers kept the hopes of fans alive when he told Billboard magazine that he felt the frontman should have taken time off to record a solo project and then returned to work with the Police.
