Jim Bolger’s unbeaten two-year-old New Approach has been given a quote of 12-1 by bookmakers Bet365 to win the Triple Crown.
The Galileo colt notched up the second Group One win of his juvenile campaign when showing he possesses great battling qualities as well as bags of class by winning the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
Comparisons will inevitably be drawn between Bolger’s champion two-year-old from last season, Teofilo, who unfortunately never made it to the racecourse again.
But the man himself refuses to be drawn on the similarities and is content to wallow in the glory of housing the champion two-year-old for the second successive year.
As well as the 12-1 quote for the Triple Crown, Bet365 offer 6-1 for him to win the Guineas and Derby but also 4-1 for him to never win another race, however, to collect on that bet New Approach must run at least once, unlike Teofilo.
Bet365 spokesman George Primarolo said: “Everybody knew that New Approach had bags of class, you don’t win four straight races, including a Group One, without being a classy animal.
“What yesterday showed us was that as well as having that something special, he is also battle-hardened.
“He was under strong pressure at one stage when Raven’s Pass went to the front but he dug deep and still had enough left to see off Fast Company when he challenged.
“He’s a serious horse and it is going to be a nervous time during the winter months for the punters who have backed him for the Classics, and Bolger as well.”
Stan James, sponsors of the 2000 Guineas, which will be New Approach’s first major target, have him at 11-4 and offer 8-1 for him to pull off the Guineas-Derby double last achieved by Nashwan in 1989.
