McLeish: Foran deserved red card

Rangers manager Alex McLeish has claimed Motherwell striker Richie Foran should have been sent off on Sunday.

Rangers manager Alex McLeish has claimed Motherwell striker Richie Foran should have been sent off on Sunday.

The Irishman was at the centre of the incident that saw Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson dismissed in his side’s 3-2 victory at Fir Park.

The substitute, who had replaced Jim Paterson, clattered into the Scotland international from behind.

Ferguson reacted angrily and was shown a second yellow card by referee Dougie McDonald.

McLeish argued afterwards that his player had shown restraint in not reacting more fiercely.

And he has today claimed that Foran should also have accompanied him off the pitch.

He told Rangers News: “We are not going to make a song and dance about it, even though a few decisions went against us because we know on another day they can go for you.

“In saying that, we were troubled by the inconsistency of that situation. Barry was given a second yellow for raising his hands yet Foran was guilty of the initial tackle, that he was booked for, and then raising his hands but did not get a second yellow.”

The match was filled with incident as Well claimed they should have been awarded a late penalty – and therefore the chance of an equaliser – when Paul Quinn went down in the box under a Bob Malcolm challenge.

McLeish also called for Quinn to be punished by the Scottish Football Association following an off-the-ball incident with Rangers substitute Peter Lovenkrands.

Rangers claimed their man had been kicked but the SFA quickly made it clear no inquiry would be held.

Even the reserve match earlier in the week between the two teams was controversial.

Rangers’ Bojan Djordjic was sent off for kicking out at Well’s Shaun Fagan following a challenge the Swede insisted had been a potential leg-breaker.

Well boss Terry Butcher – the former Rangers defender – has already hit back at that claim.

Rangers will be without Ferguson for one game – the visit of Dundee United to Ibrox on Tuesday April 12.
