Whelahan poised for Offaly hurling job

Offaly GAA great Brian Whelahan is set to take over from Ollie Baker as the county's senior hurling manager, on recommendation of the selection committee.

The Faithfuls have been without a manager since Baker stepped down in August in the aftermath of the 2013 Championship.

Whelahan is expected to be ratified as their new boss at the November meeting of the Offaly County Board.

The four-man selection committee, led by Offaly Chairman Pádraig Boland, feel that the 42-year-old Birr clubman is the right man to take Offaly forward and it is anticipated that he will receive a two-year term.

Whelahan, who famously earned a wing back spot on the GAA's Hurling Team of the Millennium, won two All-Ireland SHC titles and two All-Ireland minor crowns during his playing days with Offaly.

He was a two-time Hurler of the Year and four-time All-Star and won four All-Ireland Club SHC titles with Birr, the last of which came in 2003.

Nicknamed 'Sid', he retired from inter-county hurling in 2006 and his coaching and managerial experience in recent years includes stints with Galway clubs Castlegar and Kiltormer and also Camross in Laois.
