A suspicious white powder was today found in the postroom at German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s offices as anthrax fears spread around the world.

The room at the federal chancellery in Berlin was sealed after postal workers discovered the powder around noon, a government spokesman said. He said it was unclear whether the powder had been in an envelope.

Samples were sent to a lab in Berlin, the Robert Koch Institute, for examination, said the spokesman.

It was unclear whether Schroeder was in the sprawling building in central Berlin at the time.
