Lech Walesa, founder of Poland’s Solidarity movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has undergone heart surgery in a Milan hospital, the Polish embassy to Italy said today.

The operation was successful and the 63-year-old Walesa, a former Polish president, has already left Italy, said embassy spokesman Wojciech Unolt.

Unolt described yesterday’s procedure as “minor heart surgery”.

He said he did not have further details, but stressed that the procedure had been scheduled in advance.

“It was not an emergency,” Unolt said.
