Trainer Dermot Weld believes the horse had not got over his exertions in finishing an excellent fifth to Dalakhani in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe three weeks earlier.

“In hindsight it probably came a bit quick after the Arc. Maybe we didn’t realise he gave so much to finish fifth,” he said.

“The sticky ground blunted his speed, although it’s possible he didn’t quite get home over that trip anyway.

“He stays in training and he’ll have a full campaign next season, starting earlier.”

The Curragh trainer also had news of his runners in last Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

He reported that 2000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend could not handle the firm ground when only 11th of 13 to Six Perfections in the Mile.

“The ground was a bit too firm and he met trouble in running early and turning for home,” he said.

Of Dimitrova, last of 12 in the Filly & Mare Turf, he said: “Dimitrova stays in America and joins Neil Drysdale. She had a very rewarding time, winning the Flower Bowl and American Oaks.”

Weld was happy enough with Relaxed Gesture, who finished eighth in the Juvenile.

“Relaxed Gesture was coming home well. He satisfied me that he handled the dirt, so we could bring him back next season for the Belmont Stakes,” he concluded.
