So, with December upon us, there'll be peace and goodwill aplenty as Christians the world over celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ - and people of all creeds get on board with the peace and goodwill.
But how much do you
remember about the nativity story? If you went to a Catholic school in Ireland, you were probably told the tale many times - but which 'facts' do you remember clearly?Simon Hall of TheSkeptic.com decided to test people's knowledge of the Christmas tale. And the questions might seem simple enough, but there's a lot of hesitation.
Erm … what year was Jesus born in, again?
Among things that might give one pause: Jesus was
not born on December 25, and not in the year zero (which doesn't actually exist - the calendar goes from 1 BC to 1 AD). Only two books of the bible - Matthew and Luke - mention the nativity, and they say different (though not contradictory) things. And the bible actually mentions the brothers of Jesus, though the church argues that's metaphorical, and used to refer to important figures in the early days of the faith.
Hall accompanies his video with an article on "six surprising facts about Christmas". If you're a person of faith, you may disagree with some of the assertions, but it's an interesting read for those of us who may have forgotten some of the finer details over the years.
