Villagers in northern China attacked medical workers and overturned an ambulance in a melee sparked by rumours their clinic was being turned into a hospital for SARS patients.

Villagers in northern China attacked medical workers and overturned an ambulance in a melee sparked by rumours their clinic was being turned into a hospital for SARS patients.

More than 160 police and paramilitary troops were called in to suppress the riot in Shuiquangou, a suburb of the northern city of Chengd.

Scores of villagers joined in the violence, making it among the largest in a series of clashes across China between police and residents panicked by severe acute respiratory syndrome.
