An American man who was kidnapped, tortured and held for ransom by an Afghan warlord is back in the United States.

Clark Bowers, 37, is resting at an undisclosed location, his wife, Amanda, has confirmed.

Mr Bowers telephoned her last week and said he had been kidnapped while on a private humanitarian mission to Afghanistan.

He called his family in Alabama again from Pakistan on Friday to say he had been released after a £3,500 (€5,670)ransom was paid.

He had been tortured with burning cigarettes and subjected to a mock execution, his wife said.

Craig Dahle, an FBI spokesman, says agents have not spoken to Mr Bowers or his wife in recent days and did not know he was back.

He says an agent talked to Mr Bowers briefly in Pakistan but officials want to debrief him fully on his return.
