Shoppers are being warned against buying fake Sensodyne toothpaste.
This follows an alert in Britain about tubes of toothpaste found to contain traces of a toxic chemical: diethylene glycol, which is used in antifreeze.
It could be especially toxic if taken by children or someone with a damaged liver or kidney.
The fake toothpaste to watch out for is Sensodyne Original or Sensodyne Mint in 50ml tubes with packaging written in English and Arabic.
The pirate tubes were found on sale in markets and at some cut-price shops and car boot sales in Britain.
While it is believed unlikely the goods have made their way to Ireland, shoppers, especially in border areas, are being advised to be on the alert.
