BMW is recalling 164,000 X5 luxury 4X4 vehicles after discovering a potential brake defect. The recall will cost more than €4.5m.
The German company said vibrations can loosen the brake hose out of its mounting in the front wheel suspension, causing it to grate against suspension parts or the inside of the wheel.
Extended exposure could cause the hose to wear through, BMW said, causing a loss of brake fluid all they way to total failure of the front brake circuit.
No accidents have been linked to the problem, said spokesman Jochen Frey.
The X5s in question were made between August 1999 and April 2002. It was not immediately clear where the vehicles were sold.
