One of the children who was killed when a school bus crashed into a car was celebrating her birthday, police revealed today.

Chloe Walker, of Frizington, Cumbria, who turned 16 yesterday, died along with Kieran Goulding, 15, of Whitehaven, and the car driver.

Dozens more children were injured when the bus apparently swerved to avoid a vehicle, collided with a Honda Civic and ended up on its side.

Police said the male driver of the Honda died in the accident, which happened during yesterday afternoon’s school run near Keswick in Cumbria.

Four people were left in a critical condition, Cumbria Police added, with 35 others described as “walking wounded”. The injuries included fractures and spinal injuries.

The 49-seater coach was carrying children from Keswick School back to their homes in and around Cockermouth, about 13 miles away, when it crashed on the A66.
