Country music star Willie Nelson was charged today with possession of narcotic mushrooms and marijuana after his tour bus was stopped in the US.

State police said the charges resulted from an early morning commercial vehicle inspection of the tour bus on a Louisiana highway.

A statement said: “When the door was opened and the trooper began to speak to the driver, he smelled the strong odor of marijuana.”

A search of the bus produced 1.5lb (675 grams) of marijuana and 0.2 pounds (10 grams) of narcotic mushrooms.

Four other men were also charged and each was later released.

Nelson, 73, recorded the songs On the Road Again and Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.
