The former prime minister of Papua New Guinea, William Skate, died in an Australian hospital early today. He was 52.

Skate died in the Wesley Hospital in the eastern Australian city of Brisbane, according to a statement released by Papua New Guinea’s acting prime minister Sir Moi Avei.

The former leader was taken to a hospital in Papua New Guinea’s capital Port Moresby last week with signs of a stroke, The Nation newspaper reported.

Skate rose from the slums of Papua New Guinea to be elected a member of parliament in 1992.

He served as prime minister of the impoverished half-island nation from 1997 to 1999.
