A train carrying 70 passengers and crew struck a minivan at a crossing, killing seven people in the vehicle, US authorities said.

No one on board the train was injured in yesterday’s accident at Shafter, California.

The train was travelling at around 80 mph when it hit the van, pushing the vehicle about half-a-mile down the tracks, said Officer Greg Williams, a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The cause of the collision was under investigation, but authorities said the warning lights and bells were working at the crossing.

‘‘We don’t know if the driver tried to beat the train or flat didn’t see it,’’ Officer Williams said.
