Nato defence ministers say they are preparing for a long co-ordinated assault on terrorism, following their briefing by American officials in Brussels.
Deputy US Defence Secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, has told the Nato ministers that there is no need yet for them to join US military action.
However, Nato’s Secretary General George Robertson says the alliance is on standby.
‘With regard to possible collective Nato action, the alliance continues to keep its options open’ he said. ‘There has been no request from the US so far.’
This, he said, was consistent with the ‘measured approach’ taken by the US since the attacks on New York and Washington.
