Fans of Marilyn Monroe were today commemorating the 40th anniversary of the screen legend’s death with events around the world.
A group from the UK’s Marilyn Lives Society have travelled to Los Angeles for parties and memorial services celebrating the star’s short life.
Michelle Morgan, founder of the Marilyn Lives Society, said she was hoping to organise an event at The Savoy in central London later in the year when everyone returned from the US.
The 32-year-old, from Corby, Northamptonshire, said she hoped to spend some of the anniversary working on her latest book about Monroe.
Her last book, Marilyn’s Addresses, gives details of gives details of places associated with the actress around the world, including Los Angeles, New York and England.
The naked body of Monroe, whose real name was Norma Jean Baker, was found stretched across her bed by her housekeeper on the morning of August 5, 1962.
An empty bottle of pills was found next to the 36-year-old and forensic experts said the cause of death was suicide, a fact many fans dispute claiming the overdose was probably accidental.
Among the events taking place in Los Angeles to commemorate her death were a poolside party at the Roosevelt Hotel as well as other receptions with live music and celebrity guests.
On Monday there will be a memorial service at the Westwood Chapel in West Los Angeles, which is expected to attract record numbers of people.
