Arjen Robben has ruled himself out of Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich at the start of what was already set to be a fraught week for the Barclays Premiership leaders.

Robben limped off after 21 minutes of Holland’s World Cup qualifier away to Romania on Saturday evening and a scan has revealed an ankle tendon strain which is set to sideline him for at least a fortnight.

The 21-year-old will be re-examined tomorrow or Wednesday but he told Dutch television programme Studio Sport he will still be out of action when Chelsea - who must answer UEFA disrepute charges on Thursday – host Bayern on Wednesday, April 6.

He revealed: “It is difficult to say how many weeks I will be out, but it is clear that it (the injury) is not good.

“The World Cup qualifier against Armenia (on Wednesday) and Bayern are out of the question in any case.”

He will stay with the Holland squad to work with the national team’s physio Rob Ouderland, before specialists take a further look at the problem.
