A Kerry animal rescue charity rescued a stranded donkey from floodwaters yesterday - and ended up with a lovely story and a brilliant photo to boot.

Animal Heaven Animal Rescue received a call from a donkey’s owner Sunday after Storm Desmond blew the gate of his paddock in Killorglin. The animal then escaped and became stranded in floodwaters outside the town.

After putting out a call out for help on their Facebook page, Suzanne Gibbins of AHAR managed to secure the help of Mike Fleming of the Killorglin Rowing Club. Along with another local man, the trio set off in a boat down the River Laune to find the animal.

The donkey was trapped by the flood on all sides but, with the aid of a ring buoy, they were able to pull him to safety.

And just look at that face.

The donkey was taken back to the AHAR stable where the staff set about warming him up with towels and a bowl of hot mash.

“After a bit of recuperation, the donkey will be returning home to his owner, who is said to be very relieved.

From AHAR Facebook page:

“His owner was there the whole time with Sue praying he would be saved and was crying when we did it. Mike the donkey has a really genuine owner and is so grateful we saved him.”
