Bertie Ahern's plans for a national stadium in west Dublin received a major boost last night, when it was confirmed that Ireland and Scotland are to join forces in a bid to host the Euro 2008 soccer finals.

If the move is to succeed, then Ireland must commit by February 28 to providing two stadia.

Therefore, the Government must indicate within the next four weeks whether it will offer its support to a planned revamp of Lansdowne Road and the building of the new stadium in Abbotstown.

FAI General Secretary Brendan Menton claimed last night the Government are behind the bid and are "on board in a financial way".
