A British man was arrested today following a request from the United States for his extradition to face terrorism charges, Scotland Yard said.

Babar Ahmad, 30, was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Extradition and International Assistance Unit in south west London at about 4pm.

He is due to appear at Bow Street Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Ahmad, of Fountain Road, Tooting, London, was taken to a central London police station following the arrest in Exhibition Road, south west London.

A police spokesman said: “Officers from the Anti-Terrorist Branch are searching three residential premises and one office premises in south west London.”

The warrant issued on behalf of the US authorities alleges Ahmad used websites and email based in the US between 1998 and February 19, 2001 to supply money and property for “acts of terrorism” in Chechnya and Afghanistan.
