Eisteddfod may be upped in class after defying top weight of 9st 7lb for the second race running at the weekend.
The four-year-old was due to carry 9st 10lb at Windsor on Saturday but talented apprentice Nelson de Souza claimed 3lb to reduce the burden, and Eisteddfod duly defeated Presto Shinko by half a length.
That success, and his earlier one at Goodwood, came in six-furlong handicaps. The gelding, trained by Paul Cole, was to have contested the Wokingham at Royal Ascot at York recently but was a late withdrawal due to the fast ground.
“He did it well on Saturday and we were absolutely delighted with him,” said Matthew Budden, racing manager for owners Elite Racing Club.
“There’s the Stewards Cup’ and the Tote International as well, but he may have ruled himself out of handicaps as he won off a rating of 105 on Saturday. We might have to find Listed or Group races for him now.”
Elite won the Tote International with New Seeker two years ago and the five-year-old gelding, trained by Clive Cox, could bid for a repeat in the seven-furlong handicap, switched from Ascot to Newbury next month. But he may have a date at the sales first.
“He has an entry in the Tote International, so we are following the route of two years ago when he followed his win in the Britannia at Royal Ascot,” said Budden.
“However, he is in the Tattersalls Sales at Newmarket next week. He was put in before his victory in the Hunt Cup and we haven’t made a final decision about whether to send him yet.
“We don’t normally sell horses as we have a successful breeding side to our operation, but he’s no use there as he is a gelding.
“If we do take him we won’t sell unless we get a good price for him.”
