Renault will not be allowed to use their ‘mass damper’ system for the remaining five races of this season after a ruling from world governing body the FIA’s court of appeal.
The world champions have been using the system, which uses moving weights in the nose of the car to shift balance in cornering, since last season.
However, the FIA ruled the system illegal prior to the German Grand Prix, terming it a movable aerodynamic device, which is prohibited.
Stewards at that race disagreed, prompting this week’s appeal hearing, which has sided with the FIA and prevents Renault – and several of their rivals – from utilising the mass damper device.
