First gay kiss recorded on Street

Confused Todd Grimshaw homes in to lock lips with Nick Tilsley for the first gay kiss in Coronation Street’s 43-year history.

Todd makes a move on his girlfriend’s brother as he drowsily nods off after spending a night boozing and chatting together.

But Nick is horrified when he realises his pal is making a pass – and threatens to tell all to his sister.

The dramatic moment will be screened on October 5 heralding the start of a major storyline in which Todd attempts to come to terms with his sexuality.

Todd – played by Bruno Langley – is the first major gay character since the show began in 1960.

Over the coming weeks viewers will see the teenager struggling with life on the breadline living with girlfriend Sarah Platt – Nick’s sister – and her daughter Bethany.

He begins to confide in Nick and they spend an evening drinking as they put the world to rights.

And Todd plucks up the courage to plant a kiss as his friend drifts off, not realising the furious reaction it provokes.

Langley said: “There might have been moments when Todd’s had feelings in the past but I don’t think he has worked them out in his head.

“He’s only 18 and he’s still very confused. They’ve had a few drinks and Todd feels so close to Nick that he can tell him anything. He feels like it’s the right thing to do to kiss him.

“For me as an actor it’s great stuff to do – it’s dramatic new territory both for me and the programme, it is still a subject which some people find taboo so it is good that we are tackling it in this way.

“I have no concerns about playing the part, only about doing the storyline justice and playing it sensitively.”

A spokeswoman for the show said: “The introduction of a gay character to Coronation Street show was always going to cause some controversy so we wanted to wait until the time was right and the storyline came naturally out of the characters.

“We hope that viewers will sympathise with the character of Todd and the turmoil he is going through. The storyline is handled in a sensitive manner and has been written and directed for 7.30pm transmission.”
