The European Union today imposed a ban on the import of live birds, poultry meat and feathers from Romania in the wake of the overnight confirmation of positive tests confirming the presence of bird flu.

An emergency meeting of EU veterinary experts was to be held later today to assess whether the positive tests were indeed the deadly H5N1 strain.

The EU ban is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the virus, the European Commission said. A similar ban was imposed on poultry exports from Turkey on Monday.
