Pakistan to abstain in security council

Pakistan confirmed today it will abstain from voting in the UN Security Council on an Anglo-American resolution approving war with Iraq.

Pakistan holds one of 15 seats at the council. At least nine countries must approve the measure for it to pass. Permanent members Russia and France have already said they will veto any resolution

“Pakistan will abstain from the voting,” said Azeem Chaudhry, a spokesman for the Quaid-e-Azam faction of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League. “We will not be giving our opinion” in the council, he said.
