Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance is having a torrid time over the demanding Spanish Open links course.
Having posted a five-over 77 yesterday, the 47-year-old Scot desperately needed to pick up some early birdies to give himself a chance of making the weekend.
Starting at the 10th, Torrance birdied his second of the day, the 11th, but then began a dismal run that included bogeys at the 12th, 13th, 17th and 18th and a horrid seven at the par-four 16th.
A further bogey at the second hole moved him out to 12 over.
One player with designs on making the Ryder Cup team itself, Justin Rose, opened with nine pars from the 10th to remain at two under.
