Mourners of late Beatle George Harrison are to stage a candlelit vigil in his birth city of Liverpool, it was announced today.
The vigil will take place tomorrow night and will include a minute’s silence at 6.30pm, when Harrison’s family have asked for fans across the world to honour the musician.
City chiefs today invited fans, friends and family of Harrison to attend the memorial, which will be held on the plateau outside St George’s Hall, Lime Street.
Present day pupils from his former school, Dovedale Primary School, will attend the vigil along with students from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, now a fame school owned by Sir Paul McCartney but previously Harrison’s former senior school, the Liverpool Institute.
Harrison’s music will be played to the crowds and condolence books will be available for mourners to record their thoughts before the minute’s silence.
Council leader Mike Storey said: ‘‘This will be the city’s tribute to George Harrison and I would invite anyone who respected him for his music or his achievements to come and remember him.
‘‘He was a modest man who did not relish pomp and circumstance, so we believe this simple candlelit vigil would be in keeping with his wishes.
‘‘We were also keen to follow the wishes of his family that fans across the world should have a minute’s silence and contemplation at 6.30pm.’’
City chiefs estimate that around 6,000 people will attend the vigil.
Following John Lennon’s assassination in 1980, fans packed the plateau outside St George’s Hall for a tribute concert to the late Beatle.
