Delegates from the Organisation of American States ended a three-day conference on Latin America’s rising poverty levels by pledging to promote better co-operation among their 34 countries.
Their declaration in Porlamar, Venezuela, called for “periodic meetings of the ministers and high government authorities responsible for social development policies … with the objective of outlining concrete joint actions, assess funding needs, and share expertise”.
The delegates also noted the need to extend debt relief to the poorest countries but said this initiative “should be accompanied by sound domestic macroeconomic policies”.
