Director Preminger told Cattrall she 'lacked talent'

Kim Cattrall was told she "lacked talent" when she first embarked on an acting career.

The 'Sex and the City' star says meeting with veteran director Otto Preminger when she was just 17 made her realize her looks were going to be just as important as her acting ability if she wanted to have a successful career.

She explained: "He told me, 'Darling, you remind me of Marilyn Monroe - not in looks of course, but in lack of talent'.

"Actually he was right. I was terribly unformed. I was this scruffy provincial with wild hair and jeans who had been raised in the wilds of British Columbia, not glamorous at all.

"It eventually dawned on me that, whether I liked it or not, my appearance was going to be every bit as important as my ability. It made me realize that maybe I needed to dress up a bit."

The 54-year-old star - who shot to fame playing man-eater Samantha in 'Sex and the City' - also hit back at critics of the franchise's second movie, saying it was only ever intended to be "a bit of light-hearted fun".

She added: "Look, it was never meant to be a critics' movie. It was just intended to be a bit of light-hearted fun. I just think some people need to get a life. I thought it was fabulous."
