An Irish commentator uses a strange and slightly unfortunate word on US radio last week.
Louth native Tommy Smyth has lived in the US since he was a teenager and is a familiar voice during sports broadcasts. He has worked for ESPN since 1993 mainly as a soccer commentator and analyst.
Naturally he has been working during the World Cup and was part of the commentary team for the Italy v Costa Rica game last week.
Proving he hasn’t completely left his roots behind he used an
phrase when describing Andrea Pirlo causing some confusion for his co-commentator JP Dellacamera.Smyth felt the need to go back and explain himself to his American audience later on in the game so clearly it wasn’t just his colleague who was confused.
